Renew Chartered Financial Planner® Designation

Holders of the Chartered Financial Planner credential must apply to renew their certification on an annual basis. Certification renewal is subject to review and approval by CIFP.

The certification term is based on the calendar year: from January 1st to December 31st. It is important for credential holders to renew their certification by the December 30th deadline each year. Failure to do so will result in the status of the credential holder being amended on CIFP's public registry from 'Good Standing' to 'Lapsed'. In addition, for as long as a credential holder's status is 'Lapsed', he or she will lose the right to hold themselves out as a Chartered Financial Planner professional and to use the applicable certification marks. In certain jurisdictions, it also means the individual will not be able to use the title 'Financial Planner' in accordance with title protection legislation.

*In Ontario, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) levies an annual fee based on the total number of individuals holding an FSRA-approved credential (which enables the credential holder to use the 'Financial Planner' or 'Financial Advisor' title). FSRA charges this mandatory fee directly to each approved credentialing body (e.g. CIFP). Strictly on a cost recovery basis, CIFP, in turn, flows this FSRA- initiated regulatory fee to each individual who holds an approved credential (i.e. the Chartered Financial Planner designation).
